Sleepless in Mexico City
by Sofia Liane
Experience the irresistible charm of sleepless nights in Mexico City—where chaos, beauty, and poetry collide after dark.
I’m starting to think I should launch a blog dedicated solely to the absurd and enchanting chaos that is life in Mexico City. It's a place where comedy and surrealism walk hand in hand—usually past my window at 2 a.m.
Last night, the neighbors next door partied well past midnight. Music pulsed through the walls, laughter poured into the night like spilled mezcal, and for once, none of it bothered me. I wasn’t annoyed. I wasn’t sleepless. In fact, I felt a rush of envy. They were having such a genuinely good time, so free in their joy, I almost wanted to knock on the door and join them. (Almost.)
Eventually, the city took a breath. The silence was so complete it felt like the entire metropolis had fallen under a spell. Then the birds began. Soft chirps from unseen trees echoed through the stillness. It was the most peaceful moment of the night—fragile and perfect.
And then… 5 a.m.
From the street below, a man—definitely distressed—began yelling. Not muttering. Not mumbling. Yelling. For thirty uninterrupted minutes. I lay there staring at the ceiling, caught between two equally absurd choices: go find him and ask what was wrong, or remain cocooned in what might be the most uncomfortable bed in all of Latin America and pray for five more seconds of sleep.
I chose the bed. I got no sleep.
Sleep deprivation is beginning to cloud my judgment. I'm starting to question whether I'm searching for the cause of all this madness… or just slowly unraveling into it. Or evolving into someone who thrives on this kind of chaos. And maybe that’s the beauty of Mexico City. It doesn’t ask you to adapt. It dares you to fall in love—with the noise, with the stillness, with the glorious, sleepless in-between.
Send help! Preferably in the form of earplugs, melatonin, or existential clarity.
Yours in rhythm and chaos,
